Giants want Six in a Row

Friday, November 28th, 2008
The Giants are after their sixth straight victory on Sunday when they take on the Washington Redskins in an NFC East contest, reports Sportinglife.com

With a three-game lead in the division, the Giants (10-1) are on a roll and can virtually wrap up the NFC East with a victory over the Redskins on Sunday. New York will also surpass their win total from last season (10-6).

“It’s kind of the way this team has developed in terms of the talent that we have and the ability of the guys to say, ‘OK, we have an injury, we have to play at a higher level and the next guy that comes in has to do the job,”‘ New York head coach Tom Coughlin said.

The NFL’s top rushing offence was held to 87 yards, but Domenik Hixon picked up the slack with 269 all-purpose yards, the third-highest total in franchise history.

Umenyiora out…Strahan in….maybe not…

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Osi Umenyiora sustained a severe knee injury last Saturday night that will see him out for the whole season! What a disastrous start to 2008!!  Straight away Giants managment were on the phone to one Michael Strahan to see if retirement was something he could put off another year.

Tempting though it may have been, 36 year old Strahan is enjoying his new role at Fox Sports behind the microphone ofering expert commentary. The thought of getting back to the physical training was not that appealing. Strahan retired after 15 years with the Giants, finishing on a high winning the Superbowl in February.

On vacation in Greece, Strahan told his new employer  that  this had been a tough decision to make. “But after long deliberation and throwing around a million scenarios in my head for the past day, I think it’s just best if I stay retired” he said. “I really love my life now,” he told Fox Sports.

The Giants took encouragement from the recent return to the field from Packers great Brett Favre, lured out or retirement to the Jets. Not to be for Michael Strahan.

The Brett Favre Saga Heads to the New York Jets

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

LAST MINUTE TICKETS to GIANTS vs JETS still available here.

The current phase of the Brett Favre Saga focuses on Brett’s move to the New York Jets NFL franchise team and how this will impact his family life as well. The Brett Favre family will continue to essentially be under a microscope by the media sector specific to New York City. This will be an enormous change from the more relaxed mid west style of living which the Favre family is accustomed to. Fortunately, the Favre family is quite likely already used to the tabloids and their ways. This should not affect his performance on the playing field, however when there is essentially no way to get away from it all in an atmosphere which resembles a circus, this it may just prove to be too much of a distraction.

The New York Jets have been somewhat overhauled as a team recently and this could provide a decent scenario for Brett Favre to fill a position within the team. Just how long it will take him to learn the plays and ways of the Jets is a very valid question. This could very well be the beginning of a bumpy ride indeed.

It is unfortunate that the end of his sixteen year career with the Green Bay Packers had to come to an end by the Packers turning him away when he chose to return from retirement after only a few months. Although there were not many National Football League teams interested in acquiring the aging quarterback, the New York Jets do appear to be genuinely willing to make some concessions and adjustments for the former NFC hero. One of the only things that have remained as a rock solid fact is that the Green Bay Packers are going to be led by the unknown quarterback Aaron Rodgers who just so happened to be the underling of the great Brett Favre for the last several seasons in Green Bay Packer Land.

What is left to now be accomplished by Brett Favre in his late thirties after displaying a fair amount of indecision regarding his retirement from the sport of professional football is an often asked question in the world of professional sports today. It appears that the most popular opinions are that Brett will very likely not be up to the same standards which most expected of him to be at during the peak of his career. Although during the 2007 NFL regular season his performance was outstanding, and he led the Packers to the NFC Championship game, his performance during that final game was of a particularly poor quality. Many observers considered that performance to be representative of the current level of his ability, which could spell a great deal of inconsistency for the New York Jets.

Could it be inevitable that the great Brett Favre winds up like so many professional athletes who should have quit while they were ahead? Such as the fabulous Johnny Unitas or the great Joe Namath both of whom should have quit the game sooner than they did, only to place a less than admirable finality on their respective stellar careers. On the other hand, Joe Montana one of the greatest National Football League quarterbacks to ever play the game managed to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to the AFC Championship game at the ripe old age of thirty seven.

The 2008 National Football League season will answer these questions and the answers will indeed prove to become history. The Brett Favre Saga is one of the great sports stories of the new century so far and his legacy spans a good twenty years already when one counts his collegiate and professional career as the ultimate quarterback number four.

Hixon fires up with 3 touchdowns

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Domenik Hixon returns a kickoff for a touchdown during the first quarter of the Giants' 37-34 victory over the Browns last night. The TD was Hixon's third of the quarter. The Giants have kicked off the (pre)season with a resounding win over the Cleveland Browns. But the revelation of the game was one Domenik Hixon. Hixon was a star in the first quarter, scoring 3 touchdowns. It was the meteoric play of Hixon that was responsible for the 30-3 lead after one quarter in their first home appearance since their Super Bowl triumph. The Browns rallied through the second half but eventually the home team prevailed at 37-34.

“Since the Detroit game, getting my feet in-bounds is something we have practiced,” Hixon said. “It is something I need to do better. Every day after practice we work on it. I even talked to Amani and Plax about how they get their feet down in-bounds.”

Early Giant Stories

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The world’s most famous American football team came together in 1925 when the New York Football Giants first played against another football team, the Frankford Yellow Jackets. It wasn’t a very successful game for the Giants as they lost to the other team with a devastating 14-0 score. Little did they know this would be the ice breaker to a series of great plays that fans would definitely love.

The great story really started when Tim Mara (a bookmaker, businessman and promoter) bought the team for a mere $500. Back then, football wasn’t as famous as boxing and baseball. Professional football began to kick dirt as soon as the Giants started to leap in.

The first few years were very difficult for the team but this was when they won their very first title on the third season. The New York Giants played an important role for the people through the Depression, as it was the rare positive news that lifted up the spirits of those who started to love the game of football.

The well-known Sneakers Game, a game where the New York Giants fought the Chicago Bears, proved to be a victorious battle. The Second World War took most of the players of football and many teams succumbed to the ravages of war and folded. The New York Giants was one of the few teams to survive this struggle phase in the 1940s.

1950s proved to be fruitful years to the Giants as more and more of their team members are becoming household names. Such names as Eddie Price, Rosie Brown, Kyle Rote, Frank Gifford, Tom Landry, and Sam Huff have conquered the hearts of football lovers and they have ushered in a new era for professional football leagues. 1961-1963 were highly successful years for the Giants however these years also produced retiring players. With majority of their key players gone, the team slipped into mediocrity.

The 70s and 80s were seesaw years for the Giants and it was only in 1990 that they won their second Super Bowl when they played against the Buffalo Bills. With an additional owner in the person of successful businessman Preston Robert Tisch, the team was off to a better future. In 1997, the team finished as the only undefeated team in NFC East Division play. In 2000, the New York Giants won the NFC East Title. By the year 2002, the Giants have triumphed on their final four regular season football games.

To this day, Giants tickets continue to be NFL bestsellers. Big-ticketdeals.com has a variety of Giants tickets for all the games this year. Hurry and get one soon—before the tickets are sold out.

2008 New York Giants

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The New York Giants 2007 season was their 83rd season overall. Their 84th season still puts the Giants as a strong contender; as they have improved upon their previous records and finished last season 10-6, finally winning the Super Bowl Championship against the New England Patriots. They also garnered some impressive wins last season, by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the winning-streak Dallas Cowboys, and Green Bay Packers. The team became the 9th wild card team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl and the 5th wild card team to win the Super Bowl.

In 2008 the team will attempt to defend their Super Bowl title and improve their personal best 11 consecutive wins. What should you be aware of as the Giants head into their new season? There have been some losses that should be taken into account. Linebacker Kawika Mitchell left to join the Buffalo Bills, while safety Gibril Wilson joined the Oakland Raiders, along with defensive tackle William Joseph. Even Linebacker Reggie Torbor went to the Miami Dolphins.

However, the team has some happier news in signings and re-signings. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo stayed loyal to New York over Washington and signed a lucrative six million dollar contract to remain the defensive mastermind of the team. Other re-signings included punter Jeff Feagles, kicker Lawrence Tynes and halfback Derrick Ward. How about new talent? The New York Giants managed to snatch away Pro Bowl safety Sammy Knight, as well as former Carolina Panthers quarterback David Carr and linebacker Danny Clark from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

More exciting news came from the NFL draft, as the team scored six college standouts. Kenny Phillips was signed for a safety position from the University of Miami, while Terrell Thomas from the University of Southern California agreed to be a cornerback. Wide Receiver Mario Manningham heard good things all the way from the University of Michigan, while Bryan Kehl and Jonathan Goff were both signed as linebackers, from Brigham Young University and Vanderbilt University respectively. Other draft picks included Andre’ Woodson from the University of Kentucky as a quarterback and defensive end Robert Henderson from the University of Southern Mississippi.

The return of the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants will happen on August 7, 2008 at Ford Field, against the Detroit Lions in the first pre-season game and then on September 4, 2008 at the Giants Stadium, as the team starts the season against the Washington Redskins. How does the future look for the New York Giants? Will they repeat this year?

Fans and experts remain divided on the team’s chances, suggesting that last year’s win was unexpected. They are currently listed as #4th or #5th according to some gambling odds, behind the Colts, Cowboys and Patriots. However, don’t count the Giants out yet, as they do have multiple conference wins and Super Bowl wins on their overall record, and, as history states, were still the best team of 2007. It could well take a David to slaughter these New York Giants in 2008.

Background – from Wikipedia

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

The New York Giants are a professional American football team based in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The team is headquartered, trains, and plays its home games at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in the suburb of East Rutherford, New Jersey. They are currently members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Giants were one of five teams that joined the NFL in 1925, but the only one admitted that year which still exists. The Giants have won a total of seven NFL titles: four in the pre–Super Bowl era (1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956), and three since the advent of the Super Bowl (Super Bowls XXI, XXV, and XLII). During their history, the Giants have featured 15 Hall of Fame players, including NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winners Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, Charlie Conerly, Y. A. Tittle, and Lawrence Taylor. The Giants are the reigning National Football League champions since winning Super Bowl XLII on February 3, 2008.

To distinguish itself from the professional baseball team of the same name, the football team was referred to as the New York Football Giants. Although the baseball team moved to San Francisco in 1957, the football team continues to use “New York Football Giants” as its legal corporate name. The team has also gained several nicknames, including “Big Blue,” the “G-Men,” the “Big Blue Wrecking Crew,” “and the “Jints,” a name seen frequently in the New York Post, originating from the baseball team when they were based in New York.
